The Biology of Human Longevity is an incredibly interesting book written by Professor Caleb Finch of USC. I definitely recommend the book. The book has nearly two hundred pages of scientific references for anyone who is interested in exploring the topic further. Here are some of my oversimplified notes from the book that relate to increasing human longevity.
Strategies that may decrease the rate of aging:
• Reducing inflammation
• Reducing oxidative damage
• Reducing glycation (related to oxidative stress)
• Reducing social stress
• Repairing mitochondria DNA
• Dietary restriction
• Strengthening the immune system to resist opportunistic infections
• Preventing chronic immune activation
• Maintaining telomere length
• Replacing estrogen or androgen
• Maintaining myelinated pathways in the brain
• Reinnervation of muscle grafts
• Reducing systolic blood pressure
• Physical exercise
• Maintaining healthy insulin pathways
• Preventing metabolic syndrome
• Preventing gut leakage
• Avoiding airborne inflammogens (smoke, air pollution, agricultural dust, endotoxins)
• Vaccinating against infections
• Reducing parasite load
• Reducing visceral fat
• Improving maternal nutrition
• Improving childhood nutrition
• Taking sirtuins
• Knocking out specific genes associated with aging
• Increasing insulin sensitivity
