Essential Oils for a Post-Antibiotic World

Public health researchers and microbiologists occasionally get quoted in news stories about antibiotic-resistant bacteria. They sound concerned, and rightly so. Antibiotics have saved millions of lives over the last 60 years and are one of the most important components of public health.

Something that other people may be aware of, but I only found out fairly recently, is the antibacterial properties of essential oils. I was reading a book by Dr. Nicholas Perricone where he discussed using oregano oil to treat MRSA. I felt like jumping up and saying “wow!” Before that point, I had thought that MRSA was a death sentence because of the media hype, but it turns out hospitals have stronger classes of antibiotics to use in those cases.

However, there are still worries that new forms of bacteria could overwhelm even the strongest antibiotics. That’s where essential oils and other natural products come in:

• A professor at Georgetown University showed that oregano oil has antibacterial properties in mice.

• Two Greek researchers studied the antibacterial effects of essential oils and found that thyme oil almost totally eliminated bacteria within 60 minutes.

• Dr. Mary Enig is an expert on lipid biochemistry. In her book “Eat Fat, Lose Fat” about the benefits of coconuts for health, she mentions the antibacterial properties of coconut oil. Here are the relevant pages.

• A protein in honey is useful against antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

• Manuka honey fights infection and kills MRSA.

Secretions from frog skin (frog oil?) provide an effective defense against infection.

Black Rice and Global Health

Not everyone in the world can currently afford protein-rich meat or antioxidant-rich fruits & vegetables. In some places, rice is one of the only options for food – but white rice isn’t a very good source of nutrition.

Black rice is a good choice for increasing the nutrition of people in developing countries.

It could also be an interesting candidate to genetically modify to have increased amounts of protein.

This article explains the health benefits of black rice, which has a high level of antioxidants:

How to Stay One Step Ahead in Medicine

I’m not a doctor, but I’m interested in medical research and biotechnology. In a previous post (Staying One Step Ahead in Software Development), I discussed some ways of finding information on people at the top of their field.

A similar list for medicine might include these categories:

• Researchers who are highly cited

• Researchers who are cited in journals with a high ranking

• Faculty at top medical schools

• Researchers at prestigious institutes

• Physicians at highly ranked hospitals

• Doctors ranked highly by their peers

• Physicians with high levels of patient satisfaction

• Inventors of more effective therapies or devices or technologies

Successful People on Hacker News

Hacker News is a social news site that shares information of interest to people involved in technology and entrepreneurship. The site has some of the most intelligent participants of any destination on the Internet. In this post, when I say “successful people” in the title, it’s just an arbitrary measure of success. This is mainly a list of people who:

• founded companies that raised funding

• founded companies that were acquired

• founded other interesting companies

• served as executives at companies

• are angel investors

• are venture capitalists

It’s mainly a list of people whose comments I may be interested in going through at some point to gain information on how to emulate people who achieved great things.

To find these people, I used this Google search:

Dandelion as a Cancer Treatment

I recently read a fascinating story about dandelion extracts as a potential cancer treatment. Their paper is titled “Selective induction of apoptosis through activation of caspase-8 in human leukemia cells (Jurkat) by dandelion root extract” and is available at this link in PDF format. Sloan-Kettering’s herbal database also has an entry on the health effects of dandelion. I then did some research on PubMed to find related research.

Here are some interesting papers:

• Evaluation of aqueous extracts of Taraxacum officinale on growth and invasion of breast and prostate cancer cells (PMID: 18425335)

• Taraxacum officinale induces cytotoxicity through TNF-alpha and IL-1alpha secretion in Hep G2 cells (PMID: 14687655)

• Taraxinic acid, a hydrolysate of sesquiterpene lactone glycoside from the Taraxacum coreanum NAKAI, induces the differentiation of human acute promyelocytic leukemia HL-60 cells (PMID: 12419957)

• Differentiation-inducing activity of lupeol, a lupane-type triterpene from Chinese dandelion root (Hokouei-kon), on a mouse melanoma cell line (PMID: 10963304)

• Anti-carcinogenic activity of Taraxacum plant. I. (PMID: 10408234)

• Anti-carcinogenic activity of Taraxacum plant. II. (PMID: 10408235)

• Treatment of intestinal metaplasia and atypical hyperplasia of gastric mucosa with xiao wei yan powder (PMID: 1302542)

• Antitumor activity of hot water extract of dandelion, Taraxacum officinale-correlation between antitumor activity and timing of administration (PMID: 7310635)

Most of these experiments involve tests on mice or on tumor cells in a dish. It will be interesting to see the further results of this line of research including human trials.

Staying One Step Ahead in Software Development

In a previous post (How to Stay One Step Ahead), I shared some thoughts on possible ways to remain competitive and creative in business through observing people who had achieved success.

When looking for patterns of success in software development there seem to be a few groups of people to focus on. This is a way of finding out which languages, frameworks, and technologies are seeing increased popularity and usefulness. You can then think of how to add additional innovation and value to their ideas and creations.

These categories can overlap and some people can be included in multiple categories.

• People with technical achievement

Individuals in this group have made names for themselves through truly ingenious code or projects. Their technical output is truly a thing of beauty.

• People with academic achievement

This group is made up of computer science professors at top universities and researchers who have published widely-cited CS papers.

• People with financial achievement

People in this group have founded successful software companies or joined hot startups. The cachet gained from their ability to ride technology waves earns them the respect of others.

• People with career achievement

Individuals in this group rose to positions such as CTO or Chief Architect or VP of Engineering on the strength of their skill and technology foresight.

• People with thought leader achievement

People in this group are followed by many developers and software engineers. The people in this category gained followers through their technical achievements, their writing, their contributions, or all of the above. They have thousands of technically minded blog readers or followers on Twitter.
